Ledger Activation & Setup — Full New-Device Initialisation Guide
Activating a new Ledger is the first step toward self-custody. Doing it correctly matters for every subsequent use.
Before you start
Confirm the device is brand-new from a trusted channel. Check that the outer seals are intact and the recovery phrase cards are blank. Have pen and paper ready. Set aside 20–30 uninterrupted minutes.
Activation steps (high level)
Power on → choose "Set up as new device" → set a 4–8 digit PIN → write down the 24-word recovery phrase as shown on the device → verify the recovery phrase → install Ledger Live and run Genuine Check.
Key principles
Always configure the device with it in your possession. Never use a device that appears pre-initialised — only the first owner should see the recovery phrase during setup.
Safety reminder: Never share your recovery phrase, PIN, or verification codes with anyone. Always verify using the device screen. Use only official channels to download apps and install updates.
